29. Adaptive Diving as a Form of Therapy with Jim Elliott from Diveheart

This episode was EPIC.  Seriously, if you haven’t heard any of my episodes, PLEASE listen to this one.  I had a very special and inspiring conversation, with an amazing human being.  Mr. Jim Elliott, President and Founder of Diveheart, a not-for-profit organization was kind enough to share with me his journey and all the amazing work he and his organization is doing for people with disabilities.  Through his many years of experience as a Scuba Diver and as a Journalist, he has developed a training program that offers people with disabilities the opportunity to learn how to Scuba Dive through a form of therapy called Adaptive Diving.  I’m not even exaggerating.  There is actual scientific proof and research that has been done on this, showing that through Adaptive Diving, people with all types of disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, ALS, just to name a few, have been able to gain back confidence and independence.   It really is an amazing story and organization, and I hope you all enjoy this episode.

About Moms Need Moms

Joann Camacho, aka “Josie”, is a 40+ year old Mama to her son, Logan.  She is originally from New York and moved down to the Sunshine State about 6 years ago.  After separating from her husband, living through a global pandemic, losing her father to a massive cardiac arrest and receiving her son’s Autism diagnosis, she decided it was time to pivot and do something meaningful.  To pay the bills, she works Full-Time at a Regional Florida Bank, but her true passion quickly evolved into launching her very own podcast, Moms Need Moms, back in February 2022.  Her vision is to bring her own experiences in a positive way to all Mamas out there who are struggling but are either too afraid to talk about it or don’t have anyone to talk or to relate to.  She wants to bring her message of hope and wants to share all the realness and rawness of being a single 40+ Mama in this new era, raising a child with special needs. She does this in a judgment free and Non Mom-Shaming ZONE!.

Joann holds a B.S. in Finance and Computer Information Systems from Manhattan College, NY (92′) and holds a Certificate in Credit Analysis from NYU.  She currently resides in Miami, FL with her mom and son.
